BMW
BMW of North America diagnostic data licence information
The enhanced diagnostic scan tool information package is intended for scan tool manufacturers seeking the opportunity to license and use the information it contains. The package contains the same information used by BMW’s own diagnostic tool to communicate with control units installed on BMW vehicles, run automated diagnostic routines and display informational graphics. It can be used to develop an aftermarket diagnostic scan tool that is functionally equivalent to the OEM equipment.
The information package includes:
- Control unit description files (SGBD files)
- Control unit communications
- Trouble codes
- Diagnostic specifications
- Functional descriptions
- Component descriptions and photographs
- Wiring diagrams
The information applies to all US vehicle systems from 1996 to the present.
BMW NA offers a perpetual, limited, non-exclusive licence to the Enhanced Diagnostic Information Compact Disc Package for the purpose of developing add-on or dedicated tools that are functionally equivalent to BMW’s scan tool. The licence provides the right to view and study the information, copy it as necessary for internal purposes and use it to produce and sell diagnostic tools that communicate with BMW vehicles, subject to the exceptions below.
The licence does not include the right to reproduce or exploit for any purpose the copyrighted text and graphics contained in the Vehicle Related Content sections, including photographs, component locations, schematics, connector views, desired values and functional tests. The initial licence also prohibits sharing the information with other individuals or vehicle manufacturers without BMW NA’s express written consent.
Engineering support is not included with the licence. The scan tool manufacturer is responsible for translating and interpreting the information and developing its own systems.
The initial licence requires the licensee to:
- Pay a one-time, non-refundable licence fee of $25,000, plus $2,000 for each annual update purchased. Updates are optional. Pricing is determined by BMW and is subject to change, so please contact BMW for current pricing.
- Indemnify BMW NA against misuse or misapplication of the information.
- Obtain $5 million of general liability insurance, naming BMW NA as an additional insured, as well as Errors and Omissions coverage.
- Confirm to BMW NA that the terms and content of the Enhanced Diagnostic Information Compact Disc Package will not be disclosed to anyone other than those within the licensee’s organisation who are responsible for using and implementing the information.
- Return all copies of older releases of the Enhanced Diagnostic Information Compact Disc Package to BMW NA until the company begins developing an add-on or dedicated diagnostic tool based on the information.

Ford
Most Ford data stream information is included in ETI Scan Tool Group membership. Special services that require a security algorithm require a separate licence.

Hino
Hino requires applicants to complete a licence agreement to receive data stream information. Download the Hino data stream licence agreement. The licence costs $5,000 per year.

ETI deposits the check into a dedicated Hino account. None of the money is retained by ETI; ETI acts as a facilitator on behalf of its members to help keep costs down. ETI then forwards the licence agreement to Hino for processing, together with confirmation that the applicant is an ETI member in good standing.
Once approved, ETI will activate the applicant’s login credentials for the TEK-NET Library, providing access to the data.

Honda / Acura
Thank you for your interest in becoming a licensee of Honda / Acura data stream information.
Honda / Acura data stream information is the property of Honda Motor Co., Ltd. American Honda acts as an intermediary, when needed, to facilitate communication between applicants and the Honda contact in Japan.
To become a licensee, review and understand the following four requirements:
- Review the terms and conditions of the Honda / Acura Data Stream Licence / Contract. Before signing it, Honda recommends that the agreement is reviewed by an appropriate member of your legal team.
- Be prepared to provide proof that your company has adequate liability insurance.
- Be aware that an annual licence fee applies. Once payment has been received and the licence granted, you will receive access to the Honda / Acura data stream information. To prevent the licence from expiring, submit the annual payment on or before the renewal date.
- Obtain a letter from ETI confirming your membership status. You must be a full ETI member in good standing and a member of the Scan Tool Group. Contact Greg Potter at gpotter@etools.org to request the letter.

Isuzu
The Data Stream Specifications may be used only in connection with the development of diagnostic service tools intended for use in a service workshop. Any use of the specifications in another type of device or for another purpose is strictly prohibited.
The information applies to medium-duty trucks only. Isuzu no longer sells SUVs in the United States.
Isuzu requires applicants to complete a licence agreement and provide liability insurance. The insurance requirements are detailed in the agreement. Download the Isuzu licence agreement.

Mercedes-Benz
Mercedes-Benz USA (MBUSA) requires a licence for data from the 2022 model year onwards.

Nissan
Nissan requires a licence for data from the 2022 model year onwards. To apply, download and complete the Nissan North America Data Licence Agreement.

A separate agreement is required for security gateway access and is available only to companies that already license Nissan data. This requires a one-time fee of $25,000, and the annual data licence must be maintained.

Send the completed agreement or agreements to gpotter@etools.org. Once an agreement has been countersigned, ETI will issue an invoice for the subscription. After payment has been received, the licensee will receive access to the files in TEK-NET and will be able to integrate with AutoAuth for security access.
Porsche
Porsche offers the opportunity to license enhanced data stream information for emission-related control modules only. This includes bidirectional data stream information for emission-related diagnostic procedures involving engine, transmission, high-voltage battery for hybrid vehicles, high-voltage power electronics for hybrid vehicles and transaxle control modules.
ETI membership is required to license Porsche data. Proof of membership and business information must be provided to Porsche.

Subaru
The Data Stream information supplied may be used only in devices that exchange electronic messages with an electronic control unit (ECU) on a US-specification Subaru vehicle for the purpose of diagnosing, analysing, testing and repairing that vehicle. See Exhibit A of the agreement.
Subaru requires applicants to complete a licence agreement to receive data stream information. Download the Subaru data stream licence agreement. As of February 2017, the licence cost is $5,000 per year.
